Rank and file Democrats are deeply concerned about the damaging influence that outside spending by SuperPACs and billionaires is having on our local, state, and federal elections. Massachusetts Democrats want assurances that our elected leaders represent our interests, rather than big outside corporate interests.
When Massachusetts voters go to the polls, they should have no doubt that the candidates chosen in our state primaries are not beholden to the same billionaires and corporations that are all too often responsible for exploiting us. With party enrollment declining by 16.2% since 2016 and the MAGA vote growing in many parts of Massachusetts, we need to win back the trust of voters.
The Massachusetts Democratic Party, as a voluntary association, has the authority and responsibility to regulate its internal affairs, including nominating processes and primary elections, to ensure fairness, integrity, and alignment with our values and longstanding concerns about the impact of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision.
Our 2025 Party Platform affirms our party’s position against the influence of “dark money” (Platform page 5):
“WHEREAS, [the consent of the governed] can only be achieved through free and fair elections where everyone’s right to vote is unencumbered and the electoral process is free from political interference; there is no opportunity for the wealthy, powerful, and privileged to exercise undue influence in our political process.” For these reasons, the undersigned delegates and alternates to the May 29-30, 2026, Massachusetts Democratic Party Convention call on our representatives to the Democratic State Committee (DSC) to end the corruption of big money within our primary elections.
We call on the DSC to draft and implement a “People's Primary Rule” to ensure- to the greatest extent possible – that our Democratic primaries are decided by voters—not by billionaires or corporate-backed super PACs.
